Nov. 6 - 21
After reading The Kamishibai Man by Allen Say, about a Japanese storyteller, the students have been working on writing group stories. in Art, Mrs. Parranto was teaching them about picture composition. They then drew pictures to go with their stories. Finally, the students put it all together, practiced reading to an audience., and presented for the Kindergarten students. They did a fabulous job. I think they will tell you it was an awesome experience. Oct. 9 - 17 God was smiling down on our class on Thursday. The students practiced well. They worked hard with Mr. Malone on the music, and they did their best for God at Mass. I was so proud of them. Up until MEA we continued examining characters through a story of historical fiction about the building of the Golden Gate Bridge; we worked on multiplication and division with tens; and wrote a paragraph as a response to our reading. Sept. 5- 8 What a great beginning to third grade! I'm sure your children were tired each night as they worked quite hard getting to know the ins and outs of their new classroom and grade level: exploring new text books, trying their hands at cursive writing, discovering what all those folders and notebooks are for... We have a wonderful class of eighteen students. This week we established that we'll be working together cooperatively and with respect for one another. It's going to be a terrific year! Sept. 11 - 15 We ended the week by finding out we won the ice cream party for grades 3-5 for Marathon. I can't think of a better way to end a week that included: -Math: we focused on ways the students will work n partners to practice facts and solve problems using different kinds of drawings; -Reading: looking at how people make communities strong. In our first story, a familiar favorite, a principal wants to extend school through the year. While no one wants this, they go along with it because he's so well-meaning. Our skills revolve around characters and inferring; -Religion: examining God's creation and our responsibility for it. Sept. 18 - 22 This week: -in Math we began working with division as the inverse of multiplication; -in Reading we read a story of fantasy concerning a clumsy moose accused of stealing a pie. It's the perfect story for detectives, using vocabulary centering on a trial. It's a third grade favorite. -In Writing we've started improving our writing by using conjunctions and composing compound sentences. Sept. 25 - 29 We ended the week for a second time by finding out we won the ice cream party and trophy for bringing in the most money in our bracket for Marathon! Needless to say our class could be heard cheering up and down the hall! We also got our MAP testing completed. Although they didn't cheer as loudly , the students were glad to be finished, as you can imagine. They were troopers and worked really hard. I am proud of them. Oct. 2 - 6 We started our week with our first classroom birthday celebration, and we ended the week with a fabulous Marathon Day. Thanks to all of you for donating money and supplies and helping out in so many ways to make it a successful and special day. Also this week: -in Math we worked very hard on problem solving with multiplication and division; -in Reading we read a story about a child whose favorite place to go was a bookstore which is in danger of closing. We worked on further understanding characters. -we started Switches with Science and Social Studies; -with MAP testing completed, we were able to get into the Computer Lab to start learning with and about computers. |
